Title: Good, Solid Tool that Grips Well
Review:  This 14†pipe wrench arrived in a plastic bag inside a sturdy cardboard box.The jaws and adjuster are steel but the whole handle is cast aluminium. This helps keep the weight down but it’s still a solid, heavy tool and it feels good in the hand.Adjustment is easy and can be done with one thumb (see video). There is a scale on the steel extending jaw shaft. The steel teeth grip very well and allow you to put lots of torque onto whatever it is you’re gripping. This tool came in really handy for me recently. At our rugby club we have some steel tube railings that are threaded together and go through holes in concrete posts. We needed to remove these and after a liberal dose of penetrating oil (left on overnight) I was able to unscrew the steel tubes with this. Be aware that the teeth in the jaws do bite into the metal and leave deep marks if lots of force is used. The cheapest 14†pipe wrench at the local trade warehouse is £24.99 and whilst it’s all steel I still think this is a little overpriced at £27.99 and I’m knocking off a star because of this.

Title: Slightly lighter alternative to the traditional, cast iron Stilson wrench.
Review: As a kid, I remember being fascinated with my Dad’s Stilson wrench. It was (to me) huge and really heavy. You knew that if ‘The Stilson’ was out, then this was a Big Job, and shouting / bad language was possibly on the horizon. The only tool treated with greater reverence was the ‘Blow Torch’. Using a blow torch and Stilson wrench to loosen a monumentally stuck bolt was a rite of passage in the 1970s.That’s not really what a ‘Stilson’-type pipe wrench is for, but that never got in the way of its use – and it worked, as long as you never wanted to use the bolt again. It is, of course, for holding and loosening threaded pipes, not hex-nuts. The serrated teeth hold the pipe, and because they are angled, they self-tighten the harder you pull. One of the jaws intentionally has play in it, to allow it to move slightly out-of-square for a better grip.I’ll say that again, because one of the critical reviews complains about, “a lot of rattle and shake”. It’s supposed to be loose. If you shake it, it will rattle. That’s how it works. To be completely fair to that reviewer, this isn’t the most finely-machined tool in my collection. It’s also a pipe-wench, not a vernier caliper, so I can forgive it being slightly industrial-looking. The amount of play is well within my expectations and completely acceptable. In use, it works exactly as it should. The huge difference between this one and the revered tool of my childhood, is that this one is mainly cast from aluminium, making it much lighter than my Dad’s. The adjustable jaw is definitely iron / steel and appears to be forged. The opposing teeth are also ferrous, and attached to the aluminium handle with a rivet. This is a sensible improvement, as it makes the tool a bit less unwieldy. It’s still not a precision instrument, but at least it’s manageable one-handed.The price is fair rather than a bargain. It’s definitely a tool I’m happy to have in my toolkit.

Title: Solid enough but not the best quality
Review: It’s a heavy wrench and it’s solid as well. It all works as it should and is perfectly good enough for the occasional use DIYer. For the price point it’s up the scale for a budget wrench but not near the top brand prices which can be near and over £100. Comparing the quality to a cheap and cheerishful 3 pipe wrench set for £18 it is not as good as I was expecting, the weight is there with this but the build quality could be better, there is jaw movement, which is expected, the adjustment nut can be sticky and there is some rattling in use. The forged handle is well formed and easy to grip. It does have good strength and this does have more weight to it which is better for large pipes. In a nutshell it’s better than the cheap budget ones, easily good enough for a heavy duty DIY work but not a premium tool.

Title: Great wrench for the price
Review: I imagine that there’ll be a lot of people like me who’ve made it a decent way through life predominantly using the cheap tools that come in bumper tool kits, meaning that you have a good range of tools that you can use at a push, but some aren’t really fit for purpose! This is the first standalone wrench that I’ve owned, but what a difference it makes from the cheap little wrenches in family-sized tool kits. The adjustment movement isn’t always smooth and needs a little encouragement, but otherwise it grasps nuts and helps to tighten pipes etc brilliantly. I’m not sure how expensive wrenches get for professional use, but for DIY this one is as much as I anticipate ever needing.

Title: Light weight but gets the job done
Review: I have several pipe wrenches that are all steel and so much heavier than this one. They are also of a slightly different design in having a lightly sprung loaded section where the threaded nut sits. It seems though that’s an older style a lot of modern pipe wrenches, including this one doesn’t have. When tested on a device that I always need to use two pipe wrenches on, it worked without a problem. The adjusting screw did seem a little loose compared to my other wrenches but it wasn’t an issue in use. I like the idea of having a lighter weight pipe wrench and so I expect will a younger family member who will find it easier to work with than a much heavier steel handled item. However, at the advertised price of £25.99 at the time of this review it is on the expensive side for both steel and aluminium equivalents with no obvious merit and with the demerit of that loose adjuster.
