Title: It’s ok – Xodmao Soldering Iron Kit,60W
Review: The soldering iron in this kit is quite good, and looks pretty good quality.Has the small temperature dial and a power button on it, plus a light to let you know the power’s on. It doesn’t seem to report whether it’s reached the selected temperature though, just that the power’s on.I tested my own solder that I have in my workshop (that usually requires 350c to 380c depending on soldering job at hand) and it melted with this set to 200c. When dialled to the top I noticed the light was brighter and it did melt much quicker suggesting that the temperature dial does actually affect the tip temperature quite a bit, but I don’t think I’d trust it to be accurate. It seems more like a dial that alters the current through the heating element so if you left it on long enough on 200c the tip would actually be hotter than you expect, but it would take a few seconds longer to get back up to temperature when the tip has applied all its heat if you’re doing larger soldering jobs (if that makes sense)…So the soldering iron works pretty well in practice, and the temperature control is one of those you’d get used to after a few trial runs, plus it has some replacement tips with different shapes & sizes which is handy.The rest of the stuff in the kit? To be brutally honest it’s cheap and not very good. The stand itself needs assembling with two supplied nuts, the threads on them stripping when I tried to tighten them to keep the iron receptacle in place, and the base itself is flimsy lightweight pressed metal that falls over when you breath on it!The solder extractor works ok but the general quality leaves me thinking this will fall to pieces after a few uses. I’ll keep this review updated should it fail prematurely.The screwdriver is a cross point with what looks like a neon power indicator inside, like the electricians’ screwdrivers do, but for the life of me I couldn’t get that to work so no idea what voltage it’s supposed to work with. I think I might well bin that as I don’t trust it!The roll of solder shows a reference to flux content, but nothing to say what flux it is, nor the alloy mixture of the solder itself. I understand that the ‘traditional’ lead/tin mix and Rosin based fluxes are both internationally banned due to the health risks (with some special exemptions like medical equipment, aviation and military as it’s still the most reliable soldering method) but this kit doesn’t say anything about what solder it is. Again I’ll likely get rid of that in favour of my own solder that is clearly marked with its composition.The tweezers seem pretty good and will be put to good use over time I’ve no doubt.It also comes in a handy case that can be hung up when not needed, which again is a handy thing to have.So overall; The soldering iron seems pretty good, the rest of the kit seems naff, but if you’re after something that packs away into its case and will get you started with soldering it’s ok.
