How to solder
1).Determine the right temperature for your project. Which temperature to use depends on the materials you’re joining and the kind of solder you’re using.
2).Once your iron is heated to the appropriate temperature, pick up the iron by the handle in one hand and hold a piece of solder in the other hand. Hold the hot iron to the place where the two metal components will meet for about a second to heat them up. You want to heat the metal parts, not the solder itself.
3).Touch the solder to the heated components. As the solder melts, it will flow into the gaps it needs to fill. Continue to feed in solder until a sufficient amount is melted. While you need enough to form a solid connection, you don’t want to have too much solder either.
4).Allow the solder to cool on its own without any action.
5).Check the soldering joint for quality. A good connection will appear smooth, uniform and shiny. Make sure that aren’t any problematic gaps between the components or globs of excess solder.

Review: I wanted a low temperature soldering iron to do heat inserts in 3d prints. Review: The nanosecond I turned it on at the wall, before even pressing the power button, it exploded in my hands. Tripped the breaker, covered my hands in soot, even somehow gave me a tiny cut (although that may have been something else, I only noticed it because I was cleaning the soot off my hands).Hopefully this was a freak occurrence, as I bought this kit at a friend’s recommendation and theirs works perfectly, but it’s a pretty terrifying lack of QC for mains equipment. Amazon accepted the return and refunded me in full, but it wasn’t a fun experience.PS: the soldering stand doesn’t have enough weight to support the soldering iron & cable. You’ll need to clamp it down.

Review: I finally got to use this today for the first time and it’s not bad at all. Nothing precision, just soldering ring terminals onto some wire and doing wire-to-wire splices (lengthening a trickle charger cable) and it did the job.The stand is the same flimsy thing you get with every iron at this price, but I’ve got an old Weller stand I found at a garage sale so I don’t have to use the included one.I don’t know the melt point of the 1980s solder I’m using; just turned the iron dial to the middle and it worked. I probably should know that.The power switch and power light on the iron itself is a nice touch. I like being able to turn it off and see that it’s on/off right on the bench vs. having to pull the plug each time.Only downside is the cord is about 1′ shorter than my old iron, but it seems that most everything now is coming with slightly shorter cords.
