Title: Did the job, but a little disappointing
Review: I dont know why I do this to myself, but I do… And that is, “assume the premium brand version will be a better product than the low or mid tier version, and then be disappointed when it isnt”So to clarify: I was previously using a Savisto stick blender, which if memory serves cost about £30 and had the same key accessories (mini chopper, whisk, measuring jug, blender wand). That one worked reliably for about 4 years and then one day, I turned it on and it just died. Rather than get it repaired, as its discontinued now I thought Id upgrade – and since Ive got several Kitchenaid appliances, decided to treat myself nice and add to the set…Now, I cant fault the delivery or any of the pre-use stage – it arrived well packed, on time, neatly presented and all in good shape. However I was immediately disappointed by two aspects;One; the whisk is near identical to the one that came with the Savisto blender; that is, a super basic balloon whisk that feels very flimsy and wobbly. I know, stick blenders are for light jobs, but I expected something A BIT more robust from Kitchenaid, and from a kit that was over £100 more.Two, the mini chopper; again, EXACTLY the same as the Savisto one. Wobbly blade fitting, basic form; as above, I expected more.Anyway, I quickly got over myself with the blender wand which at least DID look and feel the part; solid, robust, and well tooled. The jug is also nice, with clean, clearly marked measurements and a rubber seal lid with detachable capped “access hole” (don’t know what else you’d call it). And the overall look and feel of the motor part; lovely. It has that sort of retro-modern aesthetic that I love about Kitchenaid, and seems well made and robust.I used it to blend a sauce however, and we were back for a third disappointment. Rather than having a power dial and turbo/ boost button as most do, this is operated with one trigger-style button, the principle being you squeeze it harder or softer for power variation… Well thats a lovely concept but it doesnt work. The trigger has zero resistance, so its near impossible to sustain a lower power without it slipping into top gear. as such, thinner liquids you would just want a low beat on go soaring into the air as you try to adjust your grip – and its not strong enough on full to do the job a much cheaper device would with thicker mixes. It just seems to lack power as well as variability.And while the blender does blend most things you would need blending (providing youre not planning on blending raw or lightly cooked root veg), the whisk is only really suitable for whipped cream or egg. Anything firmer and the whisk starts acting like a spoon and just flinging the stuff around rather than beating it; anything thinner and its on the ceiling.And as I enjoy torturing myself, I tried using the mini chopper for a couple of things; nuts, onions, chickpeas, and herbs (separately you understand, I wasnt trying to make some mysterious hummus/ pesto horrorshow), and the performance is thus:Nuts – a lovely combination of whole nuts with dents, rubble, and paste.Onions – why do I hate myself so much?Chickpeas – hummus. Seems this is the only place where expectation meets realityHerbs – leaf-litterI will say, its easy to keep clean and it really, really looks lovely; but this is definitely one of the Kitchenaid products where its style over substance (e.g. the coffee maker) rather than style AND substance (e.g. the kettle and toaster).In hindsight, and as my recommendation, I would and should’ve opted for the Bosch or Morphy one I was looking at. The only thing this has as an advantage over products less than half or three quarters its price is that its VERY handsome – but functionally, Ive had one that cost £45 that did far more and worked far harder than this.So have I learned my lesson? Will I now stop buying things because theyre branded? No. No, I will continue to inflict buyers-remorse on myself and then act surprised when my expectations arent met: However I would actively discourage you from buying this one if youre looking for functionality – but if youre a Kitchenaid crackhead, super-light user of a stick blender, and want to get a version that’ll work nice with your other Kitchenaid stuff, it IS lovely… Basic, over-priced, but definitely good looking.
