Title: Terrible base, huge startup current trips breakers
Review: This isn’t the quality I expected from Hikoki. We have their nail guns and reciprocating saw, and have been very pleased with those, so I thought I’d get the 235mm saw as a second large saw, rather than a Bosch/Makita. We already have the Erbauer, which has been fantastic but isn’t currently available. The base on this saw is more like sandpaper than a saw base. For the saw to glide smoothly over timber, it should be polished or at least somewhat approaching smooth. The base of this saw is somewhat like it was finished with 40 grit sandpaper. This was so bad, I covered the base with wide teflon tape to give it something smooth to run on, which reduced the amount of effort to push it through timber by a large amount. We own 4 circular saws, and all the others have a smooth polished aluminium base (Erbauer, Milwaukee, Dewalt brands). One of the first issues I had with the saw is the inrush current. I was trying to use it on a standard 13A socket that only had a 16A breaker on it. I had to use a 16A to 2x13A socket adapter so I could run it off a 16A socket with a bigger breaker. On the 16A breaker, it would trip every other start up – it was the only load on the circuit. Very much not ideal. The riving knife doesn’t line up with the blade. It’s bent off to an angle by several degrees so it catches when entering the cut. So rather than preventing kick back, it instead causes kickback every time as it gets stuck and twists the blade in the cut. I had to remove it, as it was too unsafe to have this safety device installed. The blade guide on the front of the saw is also less than ideal, I can’t move it far enough over so when it’s on the cut line, the saw will cut along the line. I’ll probably have to pull the whole saw apart to shift everything over on the base.We bought this saw because we are cutting through a lot of 75 and 90mm timbers, which only our cheap Erbauer can manage. We can’t afford any delays on this project, so I bought a second saw as both a backup and for my helper to use. The Erbauer is much more capable of cutting through the 75mm timber, despite also being “2000W” and using a much wider kerf blade which should make it harder to make the cut. At this point, you’d probably be wondering why I even keep the thing with how poorly it compares with the much cheaper Erbauer… I just can’t afford to be without a second saw right now, and I’m not the sort of person to return an item after I’m done with it. So I guess we’ll just make do and hope the usability doesn’t get any worse.
