Review: This is a lovely peice of kit – the cloning process from the original HDD to SSD took longer than expected but once done i was not dissapointed. My pc boots up in a fraction of the time which was the whole point for swapping, very happy.

Review: I ended up getting the 512GB SSD after attempting to transfer the 1TB HDD from my old Dell laptop to replace the failed 512GB HDD in my wife’s even older Dell notebook. It was too thick for the 7mm drive space. Blown away by the boost in performance from having switched to a Samsung 1TB SSD in the laptop, I shopped for a lower priced 512Gb SSD for the notebook and was attracted by the Gigastone.My difficulties lay in my desire to preserve as much as I could in transferring from the HDD to the SSD and worrying that, if I could not transfer the OEM Windows licence, I might have to buy one. However cloning was impossible – the system drive partition was corrupted and repeated attempts to fix just failed. Ultimately, I had to create an empty one and install Windows 10. Miraculously, that worked – apparently Microsoft opened up the Windows 10 installer to ignore the licence.As for the Gigastone vs the Samsung, the latter had higher quality packaging and case but I cannot justify subtracting a star – it is significantly lower priced. The resulting improvement in performance was similarly spectacular. I appreciated that the Gigastone is made in Taiwan which has the reputation of being a leading silicon foundry so I hope that it is internally just as good as the Samsung. Time will tell but the notebook Gigastone is lightly used anyway. Maybe it will get more use as a result of the much improved disk i/o but the notebook was originally Win 8 and won’t see Win 11.
