Title: The apex of sharpening precision.
Review: Ah, the Derwent Manual Helical Desktop Sharpener—a paragon of precision in a world overrun by the mediocrity of electronic gadgetry. You see, in this age of digital dullness, to take pencil in hand is an act of rebellion, and to sharpen it, well, that’s the artistic flourish.Uncrate this little marvel and immediately its build declares itself—a sturdy fellow with a helical blade, ready to face even the most cantankerous of graphite cores. Mount it onto the desk, and it holds fast, a Gibraltar against the tides of flimsy plastic alternatives.Turn its handle, and my, what euphoria! A ballet of shavings spirals down, leaving behind a pencil tip so impeccably honed, it could draft blueprints or sketch a masterpiece. This sharpener doesn’t merely hone pencils; it elevates them to the realm of artistic weaponry. So, if you’re keen on transcending the realm of blunt, uninspiring lines, the Derwent Manual Helical Desktop Sharpener isn’t just a choice—it’s an imperative. A masterstroke in design, it brings ceremony back to the simple act of pencil-sharpening. Need I say more? Five stars.

Title: Broke after 3 months
Review: Brilliant to begin with, beautifully long, sharp point to all my pencils – but it has just broken and refuses to sharpen anything. As I’ve only had it since May and the returns window has closed, I’m not terribly impressed.

Title: Poor Product Overall
Review: I purchased this as I recognised Derwent as a decent brand name. However, the first one I received was faulty in that the desk clamp did not work (the wingnut just did not grip the thread and tighten) and also more importantly, could not access the blade to clean. The access was supposed to be an simple anti-clockwise twist of the handle base but it was was firmly jammed and would not open. I returned as faulty and got a replacement. This one at least allows me to access the blade, but again the desk clamp does not work for the same reason. It does sharpen the pencils effectively but just frustrating that it does not deliver on all levels.

Title: A brilliant sharpener with 1 downside, when a core breaks [rare] removing it is a pain.
Review: It’s easy to set up on the side of your desk with it’s little wing-nut clamp and the hand rotary crank is easy to use.The front plate, with the hole for your pencils pulls out with a press of a button and releases teeth that will grip the barrel of your pencil and hold it in position. Turn the crank 5-7 times for a blunt tipped pencil or 10-12 times for a pencil with a tip snapped below the end of the wooden barrel and the front plate retracts back towards the sharpener, guiding your pencil and you get a beautiful long fine point. It’s really easy to use.The collection tray for the shavings is a handy little bonus and because it cust so fine you get very little wood waste.I have been using it for a few months without sign of the sharpener degrading at all, but it’s too early to speak for long term durability. Most pencils it’s fine with. I’ve had no snappages at all whilst sharpening: Holbein Artists’ (even the white which they expressly request you knife sharpen), Koh-I-Noor Polycolour, Derwent Coloursoft, Derwent Chromaflow, Faber-Castell Polychromos, Caran d’Ache Pablo, Crayola (cheapo) and several Faber-Castell and Stadler graphite pencils. I have had a couple of breakages on one Derwent Procolour pencil, but I had dropped that one shortly before, the only pencils I have had a problem using with this sharpener are Prismacolors, which disintegrated in other sharpeners too.Whilst cores snapping whilst being sharpened is a rarity (except with Prismacolors) when it happens the broken point is a pain to get out, you need to take out the collection tray and use a cocktail stick (or similar long thin implement) to try to push the broken core piece out of the main insertion hole, this can be fiddly. This core removal process is the only downside and the reason I haven’t given the sharpener 5*.It seems well worth if for the money so far and I recommend this sharpener.

Title: Brilliant sharpener
Review: I bought mine used and it’s perfect while saving over half the price. It sharpens to a very fine point which is great for colored pencil work. One thing that may be a downside is the clamps that hold the pencil in place will likely mark the pencils casing if that bothers you, but it doesn’t damage the integrity of the pencil it’s more like little scuff marks.Edit: I noticed some issues mentioned with the sharpener stopping working, for me this happened when a colored pencil lead got broken and stuck inside while sharpening. There is a maintenence video on derwents yt that shows you how to dismantle and clean it. Once I did that it worked perfectly again. Also it helps to run a graphite pencil through it every now and again as it lubricates the blades

Title: Best sharpener for fine art drawing.
Review: Best sharpener ever! I love this for getting proper points on my art pencils. The desk clamp has not really worked for me as it doesn’t secure well to a rounded edge table. But that hasn’t been a problem as I just hold the device down with one hand when sharpening. I have been really pleasantly surprised by the high quality results.

Title: IT BROKE AFTER 4 USES!
Review: it was really fiddly to put together worked fine for a few times, then just jammed and no reason why. We had opened and removed stuck leads before no problem but this time it seemed more like a screw had come loose or something, we have no idea. whatever is wrong with it we cant open it again to find out. it was such a great sharpener i don’t know what to do about it anymore. it would cost too much money to send it back as it’s bulky.

Review: I am using this for art work with colored pencils after seeing it on a you tube video. Works absolutely great! Makes a needle sharp point with absolutely no risk of breaking the point off in the sharpener as I often find with the less expensive hand held types. Well made and functions as advertised. Very satisfied with this purchase.

Review: I’ve used many high quality sharpeners, both electric and hand cranked. The points this one creates are longer and sharper by a very large margin, I was surprised and pleased especially as this sharpener cost ⅙ the price of some of the others. If you want very, very sharp pencils every time and with little effort then try this one.
