Customers say

Customers like the quality and point of the pencil sharpener. They mention it works great and creates a beautiful long point. Customers are also happy with the ease of use and size. However, some customers feel the value for money is an appalling waste of money and a frustrating waste of time. They also have issues with the clamp quality. Opinions are mixed on the durability and functionality.

Title: Superb sharpener – and gratitude to a fellow reviewer
Review: This is the perfect sharpener for the graphite and coloured pencils I use in my drawing – the extreme points it produces are absolutely brilliant for detail, especially when I am drawing fur. But I must say a HUGE thank you to fellow reviewer Ethan Diment for his “heads-up” that if it suddenly stops working, it is probably because a piece of lead has fallen into the sharpener, in which case you need to take the handle out so you can remove the lead. It happened to mine after I had perfectly sharpened a dozen or so pencils, and without Ethan’s review, I would have thought the sharpener was broken, and wouldn’t even have realised that the handle is removable, as it isn’t obvious. He saved me from unnecessarily returning a wonderful little tool. Thank you! Incidentally, I do think Derwent should include this simple and quick bit of “trouble-shooting” in their instructions.

Title: Brilliant sharpener
Review: Creates a beautiful fine point, quickly and easily. Does take quite a bit of your pencil with it, but a great sharpener none the less.

Title: Long sharp points
Review: When I was a small child in the 60’s my dad used to have an old solid metal and chrome sharpener and it was old then, it was sturdy metal, heavy and built like tank. I bought this and it produces very sharp points although they are quite long. My only minor complaint being this is just pressed metal with a shiny coat to look nice, the pull out mechanism feels flimsy in comparison so hopefully it will last 30 years. So far it seems to do a good job , no complaints at the price. Easy to use

Title: Really Really Good, so I’m Told.
Review: Bought for my dad who is a good artist. Personally I can’t draw a straight line with a ruler. To say he is over the moon with it would be an understatement. He tells me the sharpener points a really good point on your pencils and is very simple to use. He has recommended it to all his fellow art school buddies.

Title: A must for artists using any type of pencil.
Review: The first sharpener which has not broken the centres of coloured pencils and pastel pencils. It gives a fantastic point and its roll round sharpening action means it will not break the central core (as long as the pencil has not been dropped and the core already cracked). I have used it clamped to the table edge but also just as easy to use on any table as it has rubberised feet which prevent sliding or movement. It is already saving me money inexpensive pencils and crayons (previously endlessly sharpened and broken). I am delighted with the purchase which I also believe is very good value for money. I would definitely recommend it to any artist.

Title: Great Fun
Review: A great way to sharpen your pencils and crayons, leaving a perfect point for writing/colouring. The sharpener is easy to use, and it is quite satisfying, to see the end result which makes you searching around the house for more. The only negative point is, occasionally the sharpener will not make contact with the pencil, and the handle just turns with no friction. I usually sharpen a different pencil, then go back to the awkward one. It usually does the trick. Overall, a wonderful sharpener, my daughter loves it too!

Title: just doesnt work – simple as!!
Review: sorry to be so negative but this sharpener just did not work. I was suspicious when it arrived as the packaging looked a bit worse for wear and the handle was not fastened on. However we attached the handle gave it a go and the pencils sharpened finely. However after about 6 pencils that was it, The handle flopped about, wouldnt bite so it couldnt sharpen. We checked it all made sure the blade was clean etc. etc. and all it did was chew the wood round the pencil and break the point that was on. Total and utter waste of my money and didnt do my expensive pencils much good either. Returned it, very disappointed and looking for something now that will work.

Title: Sharp but with flaws
Review: The pencil sharpener gives a fantastic point when sharpened, however there are a couple of flaws to note.1. you have to make sure you have inserted it into the machine correctly otherwise you don’t feel it “release” when its finished. It will otherwise keep going and eat your pencil2. It eats your pencil. To get the long sharp point, it’ll take a considerable amount of your pencil which is painful when the pencils are very expensive such as the faber castells. You can see the difference in my pictures.3. In order for the pencil to be sharpened the front grips the pencil and leaves quite sharp indentations into the pencil, somewhat ruining them. Again its not nice when the pencils are quite expensive.4. You really do have to hold the sharpener down when using it otherwise it won’t sharpen. If you can look past these points, it really does gove a fantastic sharp point.

Title:
Review: This pencil sharpener makes points that I did not know were possible. Cheap pencils, good student pencils, pencil crayons and sketching pencils are all sharpened so efficiently with an only a minute bit of shavings which are captured cleanly in the drawer. Best of all, even though they have the point of a mechanical pencil, not one of probably 50 pencils so far , have broken. I have taught school trying out many many sharpeners – none have come anywhere close to the Derwent sharpener. I wish I had this from my student days onward. Excellent quality and performance!

Review: This is an amazing hand crank pencil sharpener. It’s great for colored pencils, prismacolors, polychromos and more, but not compatible with Luminance, their barrel is too wide, so that’s disappointing but thats why artists have so many sharpener options. My advice to newbies is to tie or drill it down for maximum stability. They give you a useless clamp. I’ve seen videos where people drill the Derwent to their desk, but I tied mine down with a zip tie and two heavy duty clamps, and it works every time. This sharpener gives an amazing Long point every time, it’s really consistent and sturdy too. The box it came in is surprisingly flimsy, and has no packaging so it’s just bouncing around in there, the first one I received came damaged so I sent it back, the second one works just fine. It is definitely worth the money.
