Review: The Tello is outstanding!! The HD downlink is very good without too much lag provided you have no Bluetooth connection, otherwise the Bluetooth will interfere with the picture making it unusable. They may be able fix this in a future firmware update. The fact that you can easily update the app and firmware in a toy drone is also impressive. I tried the PXN controller for iOS and it is unusable, it controls the drone well but destroys the video downlink. The gamevice controller works perfectly but it prevents you from using FPV googles. Hopefully they can solve the problem or they should stop marketing the split screen fpv feature because it is unusable. You can control the drone with the virtual joysticks well enough for basic flying, but many will want real joysticks for better feel. The vision positioning system is amazing in a toy drone and makes flying the drone very easy. The drone will hold its position perfectly provided you have enough light and are not over water or a few other surfaces. Around the house, the drone is the most stable, easiest to fly drone I’ve tried. The flight time is unbelievable in such a tiny drone. The pictures are really good at this level, the video is decent, a bit choppy but the digital stabilization works ok. I can see why DJI is pushing this product as it provides a real nice entry into their more expensive products. I also own a Mavic, but would never think of flying it around the house. The Tello flys well outside with aboout a 50 yard range in my neighborhood. It handles light winds (less than 12mph) in fast mode and the vision positioning seems to work up to about 30 feet. This “toy†is lots of fun and a great 1st drone.

Review: This is my second drone. I had a he$# of a time flying the first one and almost didn’t get another because it seemed too frustrating. BUT, this drone is much easier to control. When it is in the air it stays put until I move it somewhere which makes it much easier to learn how to control a drone. Even with a good steady wind, it holds its position although it will chew the battery up faster while it’s fighting the wind. I am more concerned about gusts than a steady breeze. The battery life is pretty decent for a small drone (about 8-10 minutes) and it has plenty of speed in ‘fast’ mode which I rarely use.I bought a Bluetooth controller but to be honest I haven’t used it since the Tello app works so well. I don’t think I’ve ever taken off or landed on the ground since theThe out-of-the-box range was a bit disappointing so I picked up a WIFI extender and it has made all the difference. I don’t think it was intended to be flown at any real distance. You do have to be careful as you can lose sight of the Tello because of its small size but I’ve been able to get it back by using the camera to guide it home the couple of times that has happened. I never get more than 300 ft away and that seems enough for this drone.Photos and video look good even at 720p. I’ve modified it using the TALS app to go above its limited 30 ft or so. I’ve never flown it over 75 ft even though it could go to 100 ft. I’m just a little nervous about it being able to hold its position in any wind that could be lurking at that height. If I get a windless day I might take it all the way up to get some video but normally I don’t see any reason to take this little guy up that high.I’ve always launched it using the ‘throw and go’ and retrieved with the ‘hand-landing’ option. No problems whatsoever. It does not need to be registered with the FAA due to its light weight. It has no GPS but with that optical positioning why bother? It’s rock steady even in the house.Noise wise it’s got a little whine to it but not having a lot of experience I really don’t know how it compares to other drones, especially DJI drones, which seem like a next logical step for me as get more comfortable and gain some confidence.Overall, a complete winner and I’m glad I grabbed it. Take a look at all of the youtube videos and I think you’ll be convinced, as well.
