Title: Worked a charm
Review: After a couple of tries it just worked, like magic. I was struggling to get a rounded out oil drain plug off, and nothing was working, the bolt was basically a circle. Ordered this set, tried it once and it couldn’t latch. Then after badly dremel’ing the bolt, and having zero luck with several vice grips and hammering sockets onto the bolt, tried this socket with the impact wrench and it was off in seconds. Saved an expensive and embarrassing trip to the mechanics.

First off, these two sockets will cover almost any nut or bolt you ever come across, and since there are only two, you won’t waste time looking for the exact fit.These sockets not only fit hex nuts and bolts but also other shapes as well, such as hoops, hooks, etc.They are also brilliant in that they can fit a nut at an angle, so if you can’t get a compete hold of a nut, or bolt, but can fit it at an angle, you can get enough grip to screw or unscrew the nut or bolt in stages.The only provisos to the above though is that the rims are a little wider than on a standard socket, so you need to have enough clearance around the nut or bolt, especially if you are using the larger sized socket. I have used these type of sockets before, but on some of them, the pins didn’t lock properly and twisted out of the housing so became useless. These sockets are superb and the pins stayed in place, even when using the larger one with a torque wrench. The adapters are also handy if you want to use a quick release holder, power tool, and so on.This is an easy 5 stars for these universal sockets and I am more than happy to recommend them. You may not use them often, but you’ll be glad you have them when you need them.

Title: Decent quality – useful for emergencies – not for tight spaces!
Review: These are a useful bit of kit as an addition to your usual tools, but will not replace a “proper” socket set.The idea is that you stick these universal sockets over the nut you are trying to tighten/loosen, and the little hexagons press in where required so that the universal socket fits exactly over the nut. There are two sizes of universal socket, so you don’t have to use something stupidly large for quite a small nut.They work well within their limits, although I do find it easier to use a socket that is the right size. Also, if you often work on items where space is restricted, you may find that the extra diameter of these universal sockets means they just won’t fit in the gap where you want them to go. Consequently, in that situation, you’d need the right size socket anyway!

Title: Good idea, but expensive and can struggle with tight spaces
Review: This is an interesting idea – I’m not totally sure it is needed. Rather than a standard socket set, this has hexagon pieces that will push down to match the size of the nut you are trying to turn.For me, it would only be worth the (quite steep) asking price if it could entirely replace my existing socket set. The problem is that I found some nuts where the size of the socket required quite a bit more clearance than a specific-sized one, and so I had to go back to my existing socket set for those nuts. As a result, this feels a bit more like an expensive novelty item.

Title: Useful in emergency
Review: These sockets are the sort of thing which don’t get used very much, but which can be invaluable on the odd occasion that they are needed.Personally I wouldn’t use them on a regular basis, I prefer to use the correct size spanner or socket if I possibly can, but these really come in to their own when you encounter an odd sized nut, or one that is damaged. They seem to be very well made, nice and solid and the pins are well packed so they can’t move sideways, so should give excellent purchase and not slip. I received these through the Vine program but I would have to think whether I thought that the price of £22.99 (as of August 2021) is worth paying for something you hope you won’t need, although if you do need them then the price is fair.I like that there are two sizes provided, the smaller one is great for the normal range of sizes encountered on cars or domestic appliances and the larger one is better for the bigger nuts and bolts. They come with adapters that allow them to be used with an electric drill or impact driver.The one problem with this type of socket however is that they are only useful if there is plenty of clearance around the nut or bolt as they are quite big in diameter.
