Title: Should have got one years ago!!!
Review: Having spent over 20 years of sharpening chainsaws with a round file was looking for a quicker way to do the job…. (And I had also lost the wooden handle from the file!)This appeared to be the best combination of build quality, price, and availibility of original grinding wheels at a reasonable price. On unpacking – it is a bit ‘plasticy’ and is definitely aimed towards the hobyist rather than the professional. The mouldings on the plastic needed a little ‘modification’ to take the sharpness away and to make the depth stop sit accurately, not on a little moving seam of plastic. This is the reason I have given a 4 star rating.Setting this up is dead simple; the most awkward part is bolting it to the bench!!! (Tip – mount it further forward than you think, to allow the chain to pass freely between the edge of the bench and the overhang of the chain guide when turned round BOTH ways!)Once you have set the angle at which your chain should be sharpened, you can easily see and test by eye (with it turned off) where the grinding wheel will touch the chain and small adjustments (forwards/backwards) can be made so that you can skim the smallest edge off the tooth and adjust the depth of ‘grind’ so it just glaces the base of the tooth. In all honesty I had this out of the box, set-up, tested and 2 chains sharpened in less time than it would take me to either find the file or sharpen one chain on the saw.Yes it takes a little more material off the chain than filing; but when you consider that chains do not cost the earth and by sharpening with this so that each tooth consistently ends up the same length, same angle and same depth of grind is a good trade off. The result I feel cuts better, straighter and stays sharper a little longer. In short a great tool that does the job intended, but like many mass produced items from China could benefit from better finishing and quality control.

Title: Even for a complete novice it is relatively easy to use
Review: Having owned this now for around a year and used it to sharpen around 20 chains, I wanted to update this review. I’ve upgraded it to 5 stars from 4 as I originally didn’t like the clamp. But having now used it many times I realised that I was using he clamp wrong, there is no need to clamp the chain for each cut, simply adjust it so the chain slides through it and use the backstop to keep the tooth in the right place. Anyway it has saved me loads of money on professional sharpening or new chains so I think it’s really good value.I suspect I’m like many DIY wood-choppers and I’d ended up with quite a collection of serviceable but blunt saw-chains. I’d originally bought myself the round file sharpening kit but it was a ball-ache and so once I’d had enough of sharpening I’d just buy another (hence the collection).I decided that I was going to get my chains professionally done and phoned a local company, they quoted £15 each if they were off the saw and £20 if they were still on, that was when I decided to take the plunge and buy one of these and I love it.It take around 3 minutes to set up (I screw mine to a tree round to hold it steady as I don’t have a work bench). Set the back stop, set the grinding depth and then you’re away. Takes a couple of mins per chain and they are super sharp once done.Don’t bother with the instruction manual just watch the video.Only downsides, the clamp is a bit of a faff, I’ve seen there are versions where the clamp is released with a handle, that might have been better and the end stop is a bit slack. That said for the price I’m not complaining. It’s a great tool for anyone who is an occasional chainsaw user

Title: Take your time to set it up and it does a great job.
Review: I’ve only been using chainsaws for a few years now and have mainly used hand files and more recently Dremel grinding wheels to sharpen them. I don’t need to sharpen the chains enough to become proficient at it. I tend to just tidy hedge lines and remove the occasionally fallen tree/branch on the field edges. My proficiency with the hand file would tend to result in a blade that would not cut straight as I would tend to favour the teeth that angled right rather than left. This meant my cuts with the chainsaw tended to be curved. This improved when I moved to Dremel but as I said, I just didn’t have the need to sharpen all the time so didn’t get my 10,000 hours on chainsaw chain sharpening to be come an ‘expert’. The first one of these I got had a slight issue on the switch in that it was difficult to turn on. It was very quickly replaced by Amazon and now functions without issue. If you expect to get this out the box, drop a chain on it and sharpen, you’ve got the wrong product. This needs a bit of time to tighten and adjust the various clamps and adjusters on it. If you do this as part of the set up process each time it is used, it produces, for me, a great consistent sharp chain. No more wonky cuts. I did notice that it took a while to get the chain in balance again to correct all the mistakes I made while hand filing but now all the cutting edges are the same length/depth on both sides to give a clean cut with no curving. So for someone that doesn’t want to spend their life learning how to use a hand file correctly and occasionally uses a chainsaw, then this item in my mind is brilliant. You could spend much more on other sharpeners but if you’re spending that much, chances are you are already an expert in using the hand file to sharpen your chainsaw blades so wouldn’t buy one. For me the right way to sharpen a chainsaw blade is one that makes it sharp and ensures straight cuts. If it starts to drift then you tend to fight it to correct it and that’s when accidents happen. A sharp blade is the right way regardless of how you get there.
