Review: I have a large yard which over the past several years have planted many trees and bushes. I also have a lot of critters from bunnies to deer which like to eat what I have planted. I had a family of deer on my property regularly a year ago and in the fall the buck rubbed on numerous trees and a couple of them died over the winter. I had already been replacing pens with sturdier wire fencing from the cheap plastic stuff that didn’t keep critters out very well. After the rubbing, I also put up wire fencing in a circle around each of the trees that didn’t have pens. This is where the pliers came into play. While I had worked with the wire fencing a lot already, I wondered if there was some kind of tool I could use to bend back the wire fencing on the ends easier and less time consuming. I found that I would get a lot of scratches and minor wounds from the sharp ends. I first bought something from Home Depot that didn’t work well. Then I did some more research and found tools called “seamers”. I was looking for something that was much wider than regular pliers that could flatten the wire more quickly than I had been doing by hand with a normal pliers and did a better job overall with the flattening. While this is probably a fairly decent quality product, it was difficult to use for the purpose I was trying to use it for. The opening of the pliers is not nearly large enough to have it do most of the work. I measured the opening at one point but I don’t remember but it’s not much. I found that if I bent the wire back with my fingers first so it could fit in the pliers, than I could use the pliers to consistently flatten the whole length. The flattening the tool does is great – a lot better than what I was doing with regular pliers because it is more consistent, but it still gives me more work by hand in flattening than I expected from this kind of tool. The opening needs to be much, much wider. It doesn’t make sense to me to make something with such a small opening and expect it to take metal that is straight and bend it flat when the tool hardly opens. While I expected to hand bend to a 90 degree angle, I was not expecting to have to bend it the full 180 degrees. It still comes in handy to fully flatten the wire but the width of the opening has made it a disappointing tool. If it wasn’t for that, I would have easily given the tool a 5.
