Is this the right roller for me?

In a nutshell

Ice Fusion is all about the finish: it beats all other fabrics with emulsion and the trade rate it as the closest you can get to a spray quality finish with a roller, which means no roller texture in the paint film. It’s also the only medium pile roller ProDec recommend for use with satin paints, so it’s a great all-rounder.

Useful to know

Ice Fusion is lint-free so it can be used straight from the packaging without pre-washing.The fibres are tightly packed so it takes a couple of loads to get to full capacity. For more information see below

What to use and where PAINTS: Emulsion, Satin SURFACES: Plaster, Drywall, Ceilings (including medium textured) FRAME: Requires a 2″ micro roller frame

Ice Fusion – the very best finish you can get with a paint roller

At just 2″ wide, these micro rollers are ideal for effectively painting awkward surfaces such as spindles, railings, panel radiators, panel doors, as well as narrow areas such as cabinets and shallow skirting boards. Ice Fusion is made from an advanced blend of polymers to give excellent loading, release and a top quality ultra-smooth finish that is the closest to a spray finish you can achieve with a roller. The key feature is ProDec’s exclusive Fused Fibre Technology: the fibres are interwoven together, which increases their strength and makes the fabric lint-free so Ice Fusion can be used without pre-washing.

Fused Fibre Technology makes the fibres semi-elastic: during use they bounce back into shape after they’ve been pressed against the surface, so each stroke gives exactly the same finish quality as the last, right up to the end of the job. These medium pile mini rollers are suitable for emulsion paints on smooth and semi-smooth surfaces and unlike virtually all other medium pile mini rollers, are also suitable for satin paints.

PILE DEPTH GUIDE – Selecting the right pile of roller for emulsion or masonry paint is critical to ensuring good coverage and a high quality finish. Use this guide to help you make the right choice.

Short pile roller

Extra long pile roller

Extra long pile roller

Short pile

Suitable for smooth and semi-smooth surfaces such as plaster, drywall and ceilings. Because the pile is shorter it puts down less paint and gives you the smoothest of finishes. It’s good if you’re painting a similar colour over the previous one, but if the colour change is more significant you should consider choosing a medium pile as it will put down more paint and cover better. Short pile rollers can also be used with gloss and satin paints on smooth planed wood and metal.

Medium pile

The most popular pile used with emulsion paints and suitable for smooth and semi-smooth surfaces such as plaster, drywall and ceilings (including light to medium textured plasters such as artex). It is suitable for emulsion colour changes both similar to the previous one and more substantial such as light to dark or vice-versa. Depending on the fabric type, it can also be used on semi-smooth masonry surfaces such as brick.

Long pile

Suitable for semi-rough and rough surfaces such as brick, breeze block, cement and render, where the longer pile is effective at getting into the surface texture, as well as interior walls and ceilings (including medium to heavily textured plasters such as artex). As it lays down plenty of paint it is suitable for colour changes both similar to the previous one and more substantial such as light to dark or vice-versa. Can be used on smooth surfaces but won’t give as good a finish as shorter pile rollers.

Extra long pile

Suitable for rough and very rough masonry surfaces such as brick, breeze block, cement, heavily textured renders, stucco (exterior cement plaster) and pebbledash. It gives maximum paint loading – essential for efficiency when painting masonry so you’re reloading less often – and is effective at getting into surface textures for rapid application without missing areas.

GETTING THE BEST FROM YOUR PAINT ROLLER – Here are some useful tips that professional decorators use that will save you time and ensure you get the very best result for your hard work.

Washing paint roller

Washing paint roller

Before the first use

Unless it is marketed as being lint-free, before its first use wash the roller in cold or tepid water to remove any loose fibres that would otherwise transfer onto the surface when painting: you’ll save yourself time not having to pick out bits from the paint film. Remove excess water, stand the roller on its end and allow it to dry fully (ideally overnight) before using.

The first paint load

Allow the first paint load to soak down to the core by leaving it for 5-10 minutes. This will enable the roller to more quickly reach its paint holding capacity and maximise the amount you apply with each load, improving your painting efficiency.

Load the roller evenly

Load the roller with paint and use the roll-off area on your tray or scuttle to distribute paint evenly across and around the roller. This will give even application on the surface and save you time by not having to work out paint that would otherwise be dumped on.

Cleaning after use

Remove as much paint from the roller as you can so as little as possible is wasted or goes into drainage systems. Inexpensive tools specially designed for this are available, or you can use a paint scraper or similar tool. Wash emulsion paints and water-based gloss, satin and woodstains with warm (not hot) water, with a small amount of detergent if it helps. Wash solvent-based paints with white spirit – do not wash white spirit down sinks; use a container and appropriate gloves and dispose of the solvent carefully. Stand the roller on its end and allow it to dry fully (ideally overnight) before using again.

These micro rollers are just 2″ wide, making them ideal for awkward surfaces such as spindles, railings, panel radiators, panel doors, as well as narrow areas such as cabinets and shallow skirting boards
Features ProDec’s Fused Fibre Technology: specially engineered synthetic fibres that recover their shape during use and after washing for an impressively smooth finish time after time
The closest to a spray finish you can achieve with a roller
Lint free Ice Fusion fabric means no pile shedding and no washing out required before use – use straight from the bag
Pack of 8 rollers that require a 2″ micro frame (not included)

Title: Great quality
Review: I needed to replace the rollers I got in a cheap set & thought I’d try these as I find the ProDec brushes are good value for money. I’m not disappointed. I bought them to paint the edge of art canvasses and for stencilling, but have now used them for painting the house too. They’re a perfect size for small paint jobs like skirting boards, door frames, behind radiators & other small spaces. The quality is much better than those I bought elsewhere & I haven’t noticed any shedded fibres in the paint. They wash well & dry a lot faster than bigger rollers. I’d recommend them to crafters & amateur DIYers like me & haven’t seen anything that would bother a professional, but i’m no expert. If you’re looking for good quality, small rollers at a reasonable price, you won’t go wrong with these.

Title: These reusable sleeves give an excellent smooth finish, roller not included.
Review: I used these little roller sleeves to upcycle an old pine bookcase. Using a brush was not working, as it was leaving brush strokes. I know all about using a quality brush, but quite simply a roller made lighter, much faster work of it.They worked perfectly with both the undercoat and the eggshell finish I chose. There were no annoying bits of lint released. The bag they come in is resealable and it allows the in use sleeve to be sealed overnight without it drying out.I can see from previous reviews that there is confusion over the product page, the sleeves do not come with a roller. This should not however detract from an excellent product.
