Title: Not quite living up to expectations
Review: I got this since we are extending our electric fence (to keep hens in and foxes out), and when it rains the undergrowth touching the fence causes a significant voltage drop. Another fence checker shows 8-9kV normally, and 5-6kV when it rains. It would be good to know where the problem undergrowth is, so it can be trimmed back.This device looks good initially. Unlike our other tester, you press the button on this and it’s active for about 30 seconds, so you don’t need to keep pressing the button (which can have its own downside if you need longer to check the fence). All display LEDS light in a pattern on startup, which is a useful confidence check.The instructions are not clear about how it should contact the fence. There is a long-ish plate with a little stub sticking out, and the options are to ensure the fence wire lays along the entire plate, or if just the stub needs to touch it. Maybe it makes a difference, or none, but clarification would be useful. I tried with both methods but couldn’t detect any difference (but due to the fence constructions of 2″ squares, using the entire plate was problematic).This device tells me the fence is at 7kV, so it’s not agreeing with my other testers. No idea which is correct, and no way to determine that, other than the energiser datasheet says 8.5kV. Not a biggie though – just need it to say if the reading is good or bad and, if bad, just how bad. We do have another energiser which is alleged to put out 10-12kV. Our other tester, which only goes up to 10kV, maxes out as expected. This one does also, but it also sends a lot of the fence voltage into your hand so you can’t actually hold it against the fence for more than one pulse! I know it is rated only up to 10kV, but surely that applies to the electronics and not isolation of the user! Definite lost star on that one.So, does it detect shorts? Our fence is one of those mesh things, and each horizontal thread is a wire with no connection to other threads except at the ends of the fence. Not an ideal layout for finding shorts, I guess, but I grounded the bottom two runs with a metal tent peg. Voltage dropped to about 4kV and after some messing about I did actually get it to show which way the short was on one of those runs. So for a dead short it’s probably OK.Tonight it rained heavily so I got a chance to test whether it works for wet undergrowth shorts. Voltage was notionally down to 5kV but I couldn’t get it to show a direction of the problem. There seems to be some trick with not actually touching the fence wire, but it was inconsistent and very unreliable, and after 20 minutes or trying to get it to work I gave up.It does say it won’t notify of short direction for voltages above 4kV, and I presume that’s because it needs a significant drop (from ~8kV to 4kV) to be able to detect the electric field gradient. A fence with multiple strands may also confuse it, so perhaps it works with fences using single wires or tapes. For that reason I haven’t docked it a star for not working on our fence – YMMV.
