Title: May the Phox be with you
Review: So I’ve woken up this year to a strange feeling – a billion souls crying out to improve our carbon impact and save the planet. Better do my bit then. Admittedly other than segregating waste and a smart meter, my household hasn’t been as “green†as we could be.Saw some reviews of this water filter and looked at my old Brita – yes it’s easy but that is a LOT of plastic going into landfill…So firstly I ordered the Alkali and Clean packs and the jug, a simple process which said it would arrive in 3 days – I could therefore have time to dispose of my old filter. THE NEXT day it arrived. In a big cardboard box, delivered in a silent e-van by one of the Empire (Amazon)’s elite delivery troopers… I asked whether there were any jobs going but apparently I’m a little short… Anyway, I placed the box on the counter and started to open it ( it opened with a slight [hiss] although that might be the cardboard friction). Slightly disappointed that there were no dry-ice effects for dramatic effect, but it’s all in there – filter pack and jug.First off, it’s big, with real presence, but that’s partly because it has a large jug for multiple reservoirs – 2.2l will keep me going for a whole day. It stood next to my Brita like it was disappointed to be in the room as such an inferior unit. The design is great – this thing was clearly designed to keep Darth Vader hydrated. I thought I might need Force powers to lift it, but it’s surprisingly light – clearly made from recycled TIE-fighter parts. It also looks really good as well – sleek but well designed. The dark side really did have the best toys…The instructions in the lid are clear and easy – deconstruct, clean, reconstruct – and the preparation of the filter is simple.Just remember that the filter is slower so fill it up early to drink during the day. The filter speed actually gave me a bit more confidence that the water is being ‘properly’ filtered. Don’t be Admiral Ozzell and be tempted to try pouring too early, the long pour will mean you end up emptying the reservoir into the glass – I tried that and felt a tightening around my neck – I immediately put the whole thing down and waited (apologies my lord).First taste (alkali pack) was excellent, very much like good quality spring water. Also tastes great to make coffee.Overall I’d say the Phox V2 is an excellent purchase. I asked a young aspiring Jedi in my house and he said it tasted great – but “Daddy it’s black so was it made by baddies?â€â€¦ “no†I said, “they’re just Scottishâ€.Speaking of which, the low manufacturing mileage is also a big tick, and the whole experience felt very environmentally friendly. Using Phox is clearly how they kept the Death Star’s carbon footprint low.My only other concern is whether someone from Phox is going to turn up at my door and claim to be my father…May the Phox be with you.

Title: V2 fixes a serious problem with V1. Much better than cartridges
Review: We had a V1 Phox glass water filter which came to a disastrous end – the top and bottom parted company while I was pouring water and the bottom fell and shattered. We were finding shards of glass for days. But we liked the concept and V2 makes a crucial improvement. You push a narrow rubber seal with an inverted U cross-section onto the top rim (not the side, as with V1) of the glass vessel, then press the plastic top down on it and give it about an eighth turn. Helped by a cleverly disguised screw thread between the top and bottom, this is foolproof, unlike with V1; the seal cannot be incomplete. With that done we have a great filter jug. The advantages over “Brita” cartridge-based systems are:- The water tastes better. As with a recently bought coffee machine, we did blind tasting and there is no doubt here. (But see the comment later about the “alkaline” option!)- Good-quality components. Filter jugs tend to look and feel cheap and there is none of that here. It is well known that Irn Bru tastes better from a glass bottle than from a can, and that effect may well be repeated. The plastic parts have a pleasant slightly rubbery feel and are not going to crack or split. The only minor issue is that limescale building up is obvious because of the black finish; however, Viakal or equivalent quickly fixes that.- Very clever design for filling. The jug sits in the sink and is filled from the tap with a gap of only a few inches between the head of the tap and the lid; the flip-up tab where the water enters is particularly good. (I am arthritic and not having to hold a heavy jug under a running tap is great).- Washable. There are no awkward seams or hinges and every part can be detached from the others and fully cleaned.- Recyclable. Even in supermarkets which don’t formally collect “Brita” filters there are piles of them in the battery collection bins … that suggests a big problem and a desire to recycle which, oddly, not many manufacturers appear to be trying to meet.- The same cost as “Brita” filters, despite being a unique technology. The only issue is that putting the jug together for the first time is a bit confusing, as there are nine parts in total. However, we quickly learned. One mistake we made was to use the “alkaline” rather than “clean” filter pellets for water used to make green tea and coffee. Never again; “alkaline” gave the tea, in particular, an odd taste and is clearly only meant to filter water to be used as water, as it were.Phox has developed an excellent system and should be encouraged. Every six weeks there is only a carbon filter about the size of a £2 coin and a few cubic inches of what look like tiny black and white polystyrene pellets to go into the black bin; water filtering is, by definition, removing undesirable chemicals from water so there is always going to be an non-recyclable component which takes them up and Phox has clearly minimised it.

Title: Great look, annoying lid
Review: How I rate this product…1 star = it looks great and fits in with my black appliance theme.1 star = I’m pleased that it doesn’t take up too much counter space.1 star = it is glass and so much easier to clean than the previous plastic ones I’ve had from competitor brands.1 star = the water tastes good. So much better than others. The missing star… the lid drives me crazy! You can’t pour out the filtered water if there’s still unfiltered water in the top half because it will run out of the ill fitting small water inlet lid. Furthermore the top water repository is smaller than the bottom so you need to fill it and wait for it to drip through twice before the bottom fills up. Please improve this for the next version Phox!

Title: Important to follow the instructions
Review: As title said, instruction must be followed to make it function correctly. I initially though the charcoal filter pad was dirty as black water was coming out, but after some rinsing and soaking, the filter jug works great and water tastes very smooth. The best looking water filter jug on the market.

Review: Por ahora va bien, le he dado de esta agua a mi familia y no han notado la diferencia con la de botella… Antes de consumir hay que filtrar por lo menos 3 veces porque sale un poco oscura el agua al principio.
